CCI offers genetic counseling prior to genetic testing - Clearview Cancer Institute

(January 22, 2022)-Clearview Cancer Institute is North Alabama’s only cancer treatment facility that offers genetic counseling to determine if genetic testing is right for patients.  A genetic counseling consultation at CCI includes meeting with one of our certified genetic counselors and a physician and typically takes 45-60 minutes.  Our genetic counselors work to obtain genetic testing at little to no out-of-pocket cost when testing is medically indicated. Also, based on genetic test results and family cancer history, our dedicated genetic counselors provide recommendations for surveillance and risk reduction, delivered a compassionate and easy-to-understand manner.

During genetic counseling, our care team will:

  • Conduct a thorough risk assessment
  • Discuss a patient’s personal and/or family history of cancer
  • Review genetic testing options available
  • Answer questions and concerns

Genetic testing is only offered with a patient’s consent, after a comprehensive and informative counseling session.

If a hereditary cancer syndrome is identified, post-test genetic counseling follow-up is recommended to review results, make medical management recommendations/considerations, address family implications and provide overall support to the patient and their family members as needed.

"With comprehensive genetic counseling prior to testing, patients are better able to navigate genetic test findings and make informed decisions about potential treatment options," said Amy George, Certified Genetic Counselor at Clearview Cancer Institute.
