Coping with Cancer

The group is led by Ron Williams, M.S. in Counseling, Pastoral Counselor. He has also authored several books dealing with grief and loss. This class is for patients as well as family members but more designed for patients. It is a group style class that allows patients to talk about what they are going through and what is “normal” for cancer patients. The class will help patients gain a sense of empowerment, improve coping skills, reduce stress and anxiety, and provide support.

CLIMB®

Climb® is a support program developed by the Children’s Treehouse Foundation and sponsored by the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation. CLIMB stands for Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery. The six-week program addresses the emotional needs of children, ages 6-17, when a family member has cancer. Through conversation and art projects, children will learn skills needed to cope with their loved one’s diagnosis.

All activities and discussions are developmentally appropriate, with participants being divided into smaller groups based on age.

Parents will have separate sessions each week and will be educated on how to communicate their diagnosis and treatment plan with their children.

All facilitators are licensed social workers and have received specialized training for CLIMB®.

The CLIMB® program meets from 5:30-7:00 pm on Thursdays at the Russel Hill campus in Huntsville for six weeks. Questions: call 256-705-4209. The group is for children ages 6-17 with a loved one who has cancer. It does not have to be a parent on treatment, but parent or guardian permission will be obtained.
